Graphic Design For Newbies (Canva 2.0)

You can start your cool T-shirt design for free using either Canva or Placeit or even Envato Elelements. Alternatively, if you prefer using a stand alone software you can download to your computer without eating up your wallet, then, my favorite is Art Text Design for Mac, though you may still use softwares like WordArt or simply check out Envato Marketplace for some cool and affordable products that may be used for the same purpose. You may also use free print-on-demand websites like Teepublic to sell items with your artwork designs printed on them and make some cool money from that.

    1. Thanks!

Are you struggling at all with reaching people or making money from your social media? We’re hosting a free 5-day challenge starting January 18th to help business owners streamline their social media for Reach & Revenue.

If you’re interested, grab a slot now because late sign-ups won’t be allowed:

    1. Thanks for the feedback Ariel. When a small business owner needs a graphic designed, this is what it is. Obviously it doesn’t replace an experienced, talented graphic designer – it’s a starting point (as the title implies). I hope that makes sense!

  1. That video was awesome 👏 thank you for sharing I’ve just unloaded the app, I have a question I did couple designs but they were saved with the Canva water mark, is any way to erase that?

  2. Thanks so much for sharing this info. Sounds like the perfect solution for us!

  3. Hi Jerry, I am a Newbie on Canva and I greatly enjoyed the above freebie you made just for us. Thanks a bunch. A quick question: How do I get the web based pro version to open a page I designed on the IOS Canva app. Though the page shows up in my design folder, the moment I click on it to edit, the page opens up in the App, which has limitations.

  4. Jerry I’m new to creating content using technology. I so appreciate your thoughtful, honest and detail explanations. Bless you and the family and your two little super hero’s.

  5. Very helpful, thank you! However, which would you recommend for newbies (adobe spark or canva 2.0) in creating instagram stories, facebook stories, twitter, youtube thumbnails, youtube banner, etc?

  6. What is the best way to make a copy of a design and then change the wording? I want to make many testimonials of the same design so they look consistant in my instagram. There seems to be a few ways to do this but sometimes it shows up weird.

    1. I usually just copy the “page” and keep them all in the same file!

  7. Great video!!!! Subbed. Concise. / Question: Jerry, if we wanted to empower our 108 field offices to customize a canva post by, say, typing in the city name and posting it to the regional Craigslist how would we help them do that? Is that what a template stored on the cloud canva is for or not? Thanks sgain.

    1. Hi Louis! Assuming each office has their own Canva account, you could share it with all of them by creating a link to a template they can copy.

Hit Share at the top right of the screen on a computer to generate the link.

  8. How do I find out if I can sell an image I created in canva? I know there are copyright laws but I’m not sure which designs can be created and then sold. (More info – I’m interested in creating printable stickers for planners and journals to be sold and I am, of course, wanting to be legal and above board in that effort.)

    1. Hey Linda – I don’t know the answer to that (nor am I a lawyer), but great question!

  9. Thanks, this really helped me understand Canva! I’m just about to create my account and the only ‘free’ option I can see is the 30 day trial, will I be able to continue for free if I use this?

  10. Hi, How do I put in a text box (with a color – say black) add white lettering and move it around. I tried shapes but I didn’t see just a plane rectangle.

    1. Hi Joy! There are lots of different shapes including rectangles under Elements, then Shapes.

  11. Great post Jerry. Got any advice or tips for drawing a picture/illustration on canva? (i.e. Stick figure man)…is it even possible? Total newbee.

    1. Strangely I don’t believe there is! It’s more about combining elements into design rather than drawing from scratch.

  12. The fact that you read all the comments shows real pride in your work. Im 14 and my uncle is a businessman who is paying me about $6.50 an hour to make templates for him on canva this helps a lot

    1. I love what I do! Thank you for the kind words, and good luck with Canva!

  13. wew, i just realised canva is so awesome …. in 2020 🙁 but hey nothing is too late right 😀 thx man !

  14. This info was great! I have a question since I am a newbie. If I take a picture of an item for my on-line store, how to I make the background disappear?

  15. Thank you for the helpful video! I just wish you could have made a tutorial on how to make a twitch overlay.. more power!

    1. Great idea! My channel focuses primarily on social media so I only cover basic graphic design.

  16. Hi Jerry. It is nice to watch how well you are explaining Canva. I want to purchase Canva, however I have an issue. Basically, I want to be able to write in my mother tongue language, which is Kurdish. My language is written the same way as Arabic and Farsi. Canva does accept the language, however when it is downloaded, it does not recognise it, which find it very strange. I am not on a paid version, therefore it is difficult to confirm whether it would be as same or perhaps accept it.

    1. There is an Android app for Canva, but the video shows it on a computer.

  17. Thanks so much Jerry! I use this for work for Digital signage and Twitter at a University.. and now that I am currently working from home , I have time to think and concentrate … this is a great training. I will watch more. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Great tips and things I need to grow with Canva. Awesome! 🙂

  18. with present do you always have to actually go to in order to preset infront of the class, like can it be done offline if so then How ? many thanks Dan

    1. I haven’t used Canva for presentations (I prefer Google Slides), but I’m guessing you have to be online unless you downloaded the slides as PDFs or something.

  19. Thank you Jerry, perfect timing! I now have a great tool to work on my upcoming content! Learning more everyday!

  20. Thank you so much!! I would like add some animated stickers to my facebook post and instagram post, How can i do that? help!

    1. Canva has some animated features included, or you can add them directly in Facebook or Instagram Stories.

  21. You’re a great presenter!

BUT The difficulties im having getting canva designs onto my FB page defy description.

I wrote a 3-page giveaway post in canva (about 5 hours work) and cant figure out how to get it to be published on FB after downloading it.

The 3 pp. are in my download file on my drive but there seems to be NO WAY to move them into FB.

Canva says to click the white arrow to download the design and then place it on FB as a photo, but there are 3 related designs. I got one of the photos on as a post but I cant control the size, its huge, even tho in canva it displays properly. The download seems to have blown up and I can’t resize it.

It’s frustrating in the extreme to invest so many hours and end up with Nada. There was a note on canva regarding their inability to sync with facebook. But the workaround is failing.

I guess I will just have to forget about using canva and try to make my pix look good doing them direct.

I was hoping you might have something to say about this, since the only reason i would have for using canva is to have access to all the bells & wissles!

    1. Hey Jane! Sorry this has been so frustrating. Without seeing your screen I’m not sure what the problem could be but I hope you are finding a workaround.

    1. Glad to hear Tete! I have a new video coming out Monday that covers the differences between the free and paid versions of Canva too.

  22. Oh MY i’ve been researching all day about Canva and JUST came across your video. Yours is the best thus far on explaining things in a format where I can follow easily along. THANK YOU!!!! I’m subscribing! oh btw, I robbed you of that I like being followed coffee mug shot. Hope you don’t mind. lol.

    1. Ha, glad the video was helpful! Do you have a mug that says that too?

    1. Honestly I do almost everything on the computer and haven’t done much on the app, but every time I’ve used it, it has been great.

    1. @Five Minute Social Media – Jerry Potter You seem to mean :if my save my created graphic on canvas as a PDF..right?

    1. If the shape you’re using can have it’s color changed, you’ll see the color selection box on the upper left above your design.

  23. Great tutorial! I have a question, how did you make your video with you talking and the background of your design?

    1. Hi Felixia! I use a program called Camtasia where you can record your computer screen. There are lots of similar programs out there – just look for something that offers Screen Recording.

  24. I have searched for hours through countless tutorials to find out one simple thing…How do you get a coloured rectangle to put your text into for a YouTube thumbnail as I see the big YouTubers doing? I’ve seen the rectangles on Canva under shapes but I can’ find out how to change the background colour of that rectangle..not the whole background of the thumbnail.

    1. @Five Minute Social Media – Jerry Potter thanks for getting back to me. I actually watched tutorial after tutorial that day and found someone who happened to click that button while she was doing something else and the picture was actually close enough so that I could visually see what she did.

    2. Hi Dee! If you add the rectangle to your design, you should just be able to click the color chooser box at the top to change the color. It should be to the left of “Crop” on the upper left?

This applies if you are using something from the Shapes section. Some design elements don’t allow you to change the colors though.

  25. Excellent video thanks! I see a way in canva to eliminate a background. But is there a way to eliminate it to where it’s no longer a square picture frame but now instead a cut out of the person that you can paste over or onto another picture or background?

    1. @Five Minute Social Media – Jerry Potter ahhh well that’s too bad. Somebody from Canva emailed me a question asking what I would like to see improved RE Photos Pro. I mentioned this problem. Maybe they’ll work it out. There’s a need.

    2. I understand what you’re asking now. I don’t think there is a way to do that – everything in Canva has a square frame. But it won’t show up in your final design. It’s just there for moving/resizing/cropping.

    3. @Five Minute Social Media – Jerry Potter yea but when you do that it still has the square frame even though the background around the person is gone

    4. You can cut and paste it or drag it to another page/image in the file.

  26. Thanks for the tips, your speech is clear, that’s the one problem I have in using videos, again thank you

    1. Hi Barbara! I’m not following your question – can you rephrase?

    1. According to it is. It’s also the way most people searching YouTube are spelling it.

  27. Hi Jerry loved the video, I learnt more in that than trying to do the actual Canva tutorials. One question – here is my example of what I am trying to do – let’s say I have a Canva template of Christmas decorations with the baubles on the top right corner and bottom left corner. I want to put an image of a family member inside the baubles but still keep the bauble but the photo is more transparent. When I add the photo it stays on top of the bauble as a rectangle so doesn’t blend into the bauble and the edges go outside of the bauble. I just want the photo to be a part of the bauble. I hope that makes sense?

    1. I think I know what you’re asking. You should be able to select the photo, then click “Position” at the top. This is where you can move it behind the other parts of the image.

  28. Good afternoon, Jerry! Thanks for the walk-thru in Canva. It is always good to refresh my introduction to such a great design platform that I use everyday… Looking forward to your new videos!… ✨😎✨

    1. Guess I’m not the person for you then? 😀 I’m excited about the things I share.

    1. Depends on what it’s for. JPG is good for websites because of the smaller file size. PNG allows for transparent backgrounds (you might have to have the paid version for this). PDF is good for printing.

  29. Mi profesora de ingles me mando a ver esto pero no me entero de nada y ademas el hombre abla mas rapido que mi madre cuando me riñe

  30. Thank you for this tutorial. I know how to add words to a picture to do infographics, but how do you keep the same words but use a different picture?

    1. You should be able to simply click on the image and hit delete, then drag a new image in. I usually make a copy of it first in case I mess up the original.

  31. Are you able to cut out individual objects from pictures that you upload and use them as part of a design?

    1. Not in the way you are describing. This is more of a graphic design program. You’ll likely need software like Photoshop to get that precise with photo editing.

    1. The video shows you how to create graphics in Canva so I’m not sure what you’re asking. Can you rephrase the question?

  32. thanks. you got a tutorial on making the a FB profile pic, i have a logo and its hard to get it the correct size 🙂

  33. Cool. I had asked in the comments of the previous Canva video about this. And accidentally saw this video. Thanks for the tutorial.

  34. I was hoping to see how to resize.. not with the tab that says Resize but just change the scale and keep the original crop

    1. If you resize with the same ratio (for example it’s still 16:9 or 4:5) it should keep the same crop.

    1. To a graphic? You can’t do that. If you are creating a PDF though you can add a clickable URL.

  35. This video was very informative. I am not a computer person and have been very frustrated because i could not figure out what to do and how to do it. But this gave me confidence.

  36. Hey there! Thanks so much for making this video! We have adobe suite, but so time consuming to learn all of it. This is will help a lot and quicker! Thanks again!

    1. Glad you enjoyed it! Photoshop has it’s place, but on my computer I can make most edits in Canva before Photoshop even OPENS! 😆

  37. Hey Jerry. I am new to Canva and using it to create IG posts. If I create an IG post with several pages, what is the easiest way to upload with all those pages to IG to create a post? I ended up downloading what I created (instead of just sharing directly from Canva to IG), which created several images (png). Then I went to IG and uploaded the pictures from there—because I couldn’t figure out how to upload multiple pictures directly from Canva. I do hope it is lack of knowledge on my side and that the extra step I did is unnecessary. Any suggestions?

    1. To be honest I haven’t spent a lot of time with posting directly from Canva, but I can tell you this – Instagram only allows you to schedule from 3rd party apps for single images and videos, not multiple image posts (carousels).

  38. Hey Jerry thanks. This really helps. I was just checking if there is any way to make a grid in Canva like excel and put information or import information in excel into Canva. Looking to make a catalogue for my business and this format would really help. Is there something like this in Canva ?

  39. I’ve been using Canva for a year or so and I learned more. Thank you! I’d like everyone to know I was able to get the paid version for free for my nonprofit ministry. It’s kind of hidden down in the area that talks about pricing, but it’s worth digging for.

  40. Hi, great video. I was interested in animating font in my images but can’t figure out how to do this! Any ideas? thanks

    1. When you download it you can choose to download it as a GIF or MP4 and it will animate it. Options are limited but it might work for your needs.

  41. Thank you so much for excellent information Jerry… Shall we use canva for professional logo design jobs?

    1. Many people do! My logo was designed in Canva. I’ve designed flyers and posters for clients in Canva too.

  42. Great video, Jerry – thank you. I’m new to Canva after years on PicMonkey. I like this better. Here’s a question though … I’ve created a tri-fold brochure for a client. She would like to be able to do any simple edits it down the road in case they change their phone number or something. I see that Canva lets me download as a .png or a .pdf, but those aren’t editable, are they? Do you know how I could transfer my editable file from my Canva to hers so she can edit it in the future? I explained that she could open a free Canva account to do that.

  43. Jerry, this is the best Canva tutorial I’ve watched (and I’ve watched many). Thank you for explaining the value-add from buying the ‘pro’ version. You explain it better than Canva does!

    1. Ha, glad to hear it was helpful Katherine! I’m a big fan of Canva.

  44. Thanks sooo much for this! I learned more in your 15 minutes than I did in a one and a half hour course! You rock as always!! 👍👍🙏🙏

  45. Hello,
Thanks for a good overview video. Wondering which template is most suitable to choose if you want to make a 12-page brochure and want to create all 12 pages in canva, i.e. not just a cover page, but the entire brochure.?
I would then like to send the entire completed 12-page brochure for printing. How can I get an idea of what it will look like before deciding to print eg 1000 pcs?

    1. Canva has HUNDREDS of templates so there is no way I can recommend one, especially since design is so subjective.

As far as printing, you can order prints from inside Canva, or you can download it as a PDF and take it to a printer. Good luck with your project!

  46. If I’m making a power point presentation, what template would I use (or pixel size, or whatever I need to make it the right size to fit the screen)? I know you showed the option for a presentation but your example was a square.

    1. Canva has a presentation template, but generally for that you’ll want to use 1920px x 1080px.

  47. So, I made an Instragram story and post, but cannot figure how to get it to my Instagram account. Help???

    1. You have to manually upload it – save it on your phone and then open the Instagram app.

  48. thank jerry 4 this. Just wondering how can i create a template that i can ALWAYS use for any of my social media posts i.e i just want to come in and use a template that i created on canva so i can quickly put my image and it fits right in without having to adjust it manually all the time. Kindly tell me how to do it. It will save me SO much TIME. 🙏🏾. Thanks

    1. @Five Minute Social Media – Jerry Potter Hey jerry just a quick question…there is a font that is called “nova round” but i cannot find it in canva. Is there a font that u know that is closest to this? 😬 thanks

    2. They’re all a little different. For Facebook & Instagram I try and do 1080 x 1350 because it takes up the most screen space on mobile.

Square is decent on LinkedIn, and wider images are less likely to get cropped on Twitter.

    3. @Five Minute Social Media – Jerry Potter Thanks for that jerry 🙏🏾! Is there a perfect template dimension size that you would recommend. That would work across the board (social media platforms) best?

    4. When you login to Canva it will show you your previous designs. You can just have one called Instagram Template, Facebook Template, etc. Then just open it and put the new image in.

If you want to preserve any, you can copy it (there’s a little copy button above each “page” in your design). Then just edit the copy.

    1. Hi Shaikha! I recorded it in January, yes, but Canva is always making changes. Is there a specific place you’re getting stuck?

    1. Your designs should all be automatically saved! Then you can go back in and re-edit them anytime. You can also make a copy of it and edit the copy if you want to save the original.

    1. I love all the new features! But yeah, it required an updated tutorial too. 😀

    1. Without seeing your screen I couldn’t tell you for sure, but is the color of the text the same as your background?

  49. I have gotten a lot better with canva usage overall but I see designs that have diff colors fade into each other or two different patterns (I use canva design templates for my photobooth) any suggestions?

    1. That is a newer feature that has come out since this video was made – They are releasing new features all the time! Under elements search for ‘gradients.’

  50. Great tutorial thank you! How do I save my work after altering a template? I tried saving it and it just goes back to looking like the original template if I either close the workspace or click onto the second page (2of2).

    1. You can’t necessarily have your own “templates,” but your design saves. When you are on the home screen (right after logging in) you should see all your designs by scrolling down. If you titled them you can also search for them. But they will not come up in the Templates section.

  51. I find it hard to work with the lettering on Canva and you say in the video down here and I do not see where you are

    1. @Five Minute Social Media – Jerry Potter It must have been something wrong with the program or FaceBook as it is working this morning. thanx

    2. Sorry about that Sandy! Can you tell me where in the video you are referring too? At what minute-mark?

    1. 😆 Right? Shame on me. 😉 The “Five Minute” part is the sentiment of the brand – efficiency. I’d never lengthen a 3-minute video just to fill 5 minutes, but I also don’t want to leave important info out of a longer one like this!

    1. 😆 Hope I didn’t scare you. Good luck finding a soothing solution. Lots of great Canva teachers out there!

  52. You know what.. I got everything that I needed to get started with Canva! Thanks so much, man! 🙂

  53. Hi, great video, thank you! Do you need to have the paid version to ‘schedule’ a post? I have the free version but can’t find this tab. Thank you!

    1. I believe so – I have never used it though. If you’re looking for a great, free scheduling tool, I love Buffer. You can see how it works in this video if you’re interested:

  54. Hello, I’m a Realtor and would like to create some just listed or just sold and other Real Estate flyers on Canva. Do you happen to have a video (beginning 101) that shows you how to create a Facebook Flyer by adding photos of the property and adding text with property info and personalizing as well using one of the templates offered by Canva? I tried doing it my self but couldn’t figure out how to replace an image, add text, add my personal info and save it. I appreciate any help that you can offer me. Thank you!

    1. Hey Cathy! To replace an image in a template you should be able to just upload it, then drag it to where the current photo is. Text has its own button on the left as shown in the video.

Unfortunately I don’t have a full tutorial beyond this one, but hopefully those point you in the right direction?

    1. @Five Minute Social Media – Jerry Potter Thanks, but I did find out I can create the format through CANVA and make it transparent through a website called for free.

    2. Unfortunately Canva doesn’t really allow trimming around yourself in a photo. You’d need Photoshop or something more robust for that.

    1. Good in what way? We use it my agency every day to do work for clients. Is that what you mean?

  55. This is awesome!
Just starting our instagram 21days2go and trying to learn a bit of graphic design!

    1. Canva is perfect for that – Lots of great templates in there too Lucas. Good luck with your Instagram!

  56. Thank you Jerry, I LOVE your content. It’s like Instagram for Dummies 🙂 Short, but jammed packed with the necessary info. I shared it with my team and they better subscribe!

    1. You are so kind! And I’m flattered you’d threaten your team to get them to subscribe. 😆

  57. really amazing I am a freelancer and doing SEO digital marketing but i dont have a skill on graphic design but my some of the clients are ask for their social media post ,,website post attach logo,,,i m feeling tension,,but this app can be very helpful for me,,thanks you so much

  58. How do you group elements? Can you provide info on just that. I often create from scratch and the “group” option does not appear. What am I not getting? ☺

  59. Could I please ask how to change the colour of a Graphic picture? I’m trying to just turn a Mandala white vs. black & white with a blue background?

    1. Hey Debbie! That’s a more complex process and I don’t think there’s a good way to do that in Canva. Sorry I don’t have a better answer!

    1. Great question! I just searched and didn’t see any templates either.

I asked Canva about it – Will let you know if I hear back!

  60. I ❤ Canva! I use the app to make my graphics. This is a cool tutorial JP. 😁👍🏾

    1. If you can have a crush on software, I’m definitely 😍 for Canva.

  61. hey i cant upload pics at high quality by using buffer automatic post system….. please give me solution i need to upload pics at high quality…..plzz help me……i promise that i pay you if you help me please

    1. If that’s the case then Buffer might be shrinking the quality – You’d have to contact their support. I know some programs do that for videos especially – very frustrating!

  62. Perfect example: when YOU [ I ] need a teacher at the perfect one comes…along! Gearing up my online teachers’ resource development efforts and your ‘words/tips’ are gems! Thank-you! Getting educators and caregivers to make certain: Play Builds Kids!

    1. Sounds like you’re on a great mission Diane! Glad the video was helpful. 😀

    1. Hmm, I’m currently using pixteller, beside the static graphics they also allow me to animate my social media content and not only, how canva compares with this?
