How To Add Texture To Your T-Shirt Designs Easy

You can start your cool T-shirt design for free using either Canva or Placeit or even Envato Elelements. Alternatively, if you prefer using a stand alone software you can download to your computer without eating up your wallet, then, my favorite is Art Text Design for Mac, though you may still use softwares like WordArt or simply check out Envato Marketplace for some cool and affordable products that may be used for the same purpose. You may also use free print-on-demand websites like Teepublic to sell items with your artwork designs printed on them and make some cool money from that.

  1. LEE!! Thank you. I’ve been watching your videos for about a year.
I work in a screenprint shop and do all of the pre press separations, film printing, etc and there is nothing worse than masked files, non expanded fonts and pasted raster images. You’re speaking my language. I wish people understood this 🙌🏽
    Love your work man.

    1. @Lee Stuart I deal with a lot of trade work business and industrial firms here and at least once per month I’ll get a jpeg photo of an old printed T-shirt or the logo on the side of a work truck and asked to print it with no files. The utter shock when I tell them it’s going to cost them some design time is unbelievable. It’s 2020!
Can’t wait for whatever you’ve got coming next man. Appreciate all your tips, tricks, learnings and advice.

    2. Thanks man! I do all that stuff here and the amount of files I get like that drives me insane, especially when it comes from proper designers or design firms. I’ve called and chewed out a few of them for this stuff 😂

  2. LOL LITERALLY THE FIRST STEP is not possible.
so what is the step BEFORE compound path? because everyone starts here and i am missing ALL the info before you get to that point.
All i have is 1 text box with 6 letters in it. literally placed text, wrote text, then chose a color. and i cannot compound path it. so what is the step before compound path? how do you prepare the design to be compound pathed? because the text is idle grey for me. compound path is not an option.

  3. I can relate on this in so many ways! Really good tutorial and very professional. Wish more designers had the same mindset and thinking like you. And no, not a piece of shit 😉 Keep it up!

    1. @Lee Stuart so we just bought a vg2-640
After watching your nightmare of a setup process, here’s to hoping ours is a smoother experience. Your videos have been an inspiration to take a few more chances in life 🙌

  4. Is there a specific name for the artwork style used here? I’m really interested in the style used for the artwork, but can’t seem to find online any tutorial of how to do it.

  5. Lee whats good awesome video again. Can you guys make a video how you make a design in illustrator like that skull or that ninja mask maybe in timelapse or something? Would be cool. Gr Tris

  6. I’ve made it a point to use the idiot proof ways as much as possible myself, wouldn’t even know how to use that mask tbh haha

  7. Hello, please it could be possible to translate the videos into Spanish, at least the most current ones and those that come. Thank you

  8. when you don’t print anything not good with art but you still support someone.. I Hit that like button and tell others to subscribe 🙂 cause even if you are not into this you are definitely someone that can make anything interesting and fun.
Keep up the great work and seriously some great step by step shit. keep it up. also bloopers are awesome.. cheers.

  9. Awesome man. Thanks for this great tutorial 🙌🏼 weird how just yesterday i was thinking about adding texture to one of logos 😅
Skillshare is amazing. I joined to learn many things, especially how to use illustrator, because i jumped in this as a hobby and never used illustrator before 🤷🏻‍♂️
Great video man, your channel helps a lot, thanks for that 👊🏼

    1. Glad to hear man! I learned so much about this stuff on Skillshare, that’s how I got started. I’ve turned down hundreds of potential sponsors for videos, but this one I jumped at because I 100% stand behind it

  10. 4:59 🤣🤣🤣 expanding fonts. I love the aggravation in your voice. Can’t wait for that video. Lmfao ✌️🤣

  11. Man Lee, you always share the exact Ai skill I need bro lol (seriously) Ive been trying to figure this method out for awhile now…

  12. Thank You for the grit textures, been a subscriber for quite sometime now, really love what you doing, keep it up!

  13. Totally with you, ive been cutting vinyl for years before going into screen (which is YOUR fault!!) – the amount of .AI artwork i open and am like…. what the hell is going on here??

  14. I tend to use CTRL/CMND + 2 to lock objects (CTRL/CMND + SHIFT + 2 to unlock) so I can’t touch or move them.

But CTRL/CMND + 3 is super helpful as it hides and unhides shit (CTRL/CMND + SHIFT + 3 unhides) when you don’t want to see it. Means you don’t have to go into your layers panel and hit the eye every time!

Hope this helps anyone in the chat! <3

    1. I tend to avoid as many of the 3 key shortcuts as possible because my hands are so broken and I can’t press them without needing both 😂, but for anyone normal this is great for the workflow

  15. Great video. This helped a lot. Just learning how to separate colors with no rip and adding an underbase. Very helpful.

  16. Hi Lee

What file is best to save/send to a screen printer? Ai or Jpeg etc?

Absolutely loving these tutorial videos. You should deffo turn these turotrial civeos it into a series. From beginner illustrator users/designers and then upto advanced level (Just and idea) 🙂

    1. Definitely .ai, or vector .pdf if you think someone might be working outside of illustrator. I plan on lots more illustrator stuff in the future so that’s an option 🤘🏻

  17. You are a perfectionist and that is very inspiring.
You should make a video of how to finish your art to be printed as a photolith

  18. hey man I love your videos! Can you do a tutorial on taking a full color rgb image in photoshop and turn it into cmyk format for printing?
