T-Shirt Design Tutorial Ep.1

You can start your cool T-shirt design for free using either Canva or Placeit or even Envato Elelements. Alternatively, if you prefer using a stand alone software you can download to your computer without eating up your wallet, then, my favorite is Art Text Design for Mac, though you may still use softwares like WordArt or simply check out Envato Marketplace for some cool and affordable products that may be used for the same purpose. You may also use free print-on-demand websites like Teepublic to sell items with your artwork designs printed on them and make some cool money from that.

  1. Loving the content man. Just getting start with T-Shirt design and your videos are exactly what I’m looking for. Great work.

  2. Charley,

I’ve been using dissolve techniques but my exported png/jpg still has the hard edges of the artboard and/or design when applied to a black shirt. What am I not doing?

  3. Hi Charley–I work with 3-4 illustrators/graphic designers but I want to start doing my own designs. I’m looking for something specific you might have covered in this series. In Photoshop: it’s when you take some text that is sitting on a graphic, and carve out the edge of that text so there is some space between the text and the graphic. Hope my description is good enough. I know how to do it, but my process is super complicated. I make a copy of the text layer. Then add a stroke through layer style. Then I rasterize the layer style. Create a selection of that rasterized layer. Then use the selection to carve out the shape of the text on the graphic. Thanks!!

    1. Found it. I was wrongly using the magic want to select a layer, when I should have been CTRL-clicking on layer panel. Also needed to be using select>modify>expand with that I was trying to achieve.

  4. Hey charley, i want to say thank you for taking you time and showing us the how to T-shirt design. i am a Disabled Veteran trying to acquire the skills to make T-shirts that will support the Veteran lifestyle and struggle. i am just starting out and i always revert back to your videos when i need to do a thing, for that i say thanks and keep on doing what you do.. you rock. jmel

  5. where are all the design resources for the t-shirt tutorials on your website. all i found was a 401 page not found.

  6. Good tutorial because it’s free. One thing I’d suggest though is thoroughly showing how you’re doing things. I can’t get past the 4:30 mark where you use ruler and scissors to cut the circles and ungroup them. I continue to do them step by step with very different results mine were never cut basically. Please in the future make sure to not only say but show each step. Like you did when you said to copy the circle in place.

  7. Hi Charley! Thanks for your inspirational videos. Do you think Canva could be enough for designing my t-shirts? I am not familiar with Adobe Illustrator. I have been on the slow very slow learning curve since 2019 and have learned Canva. What are some of the main differences between Adobe and Canva?
Is BellaCanva website like Printful? I only knew Bella Canva as a T-shirt type on Printful.

  8. Really appreciate your videos! Having a lot of trouble though…is there any way you could show the process of selecting an image (from freepik, google, etc.) and bringing it in to illustrate to use? I’m brand new to this and have been trying to get images into illustrate for t-shirt designs but they always either have a white background or the box with the lines through it…like I said, I’m brand new and don’t know the terminology. I’m stuck trying to figure out how you’ve imported the skull you used previously or the various lion heads, for example. In the video with the lion logo you had several lion heads to choose from and you simply copied the one you wanted to your art board. When you click the head it already had the paths mapped out. How did you get to that point? If there is already a tutorial on this could someone please link it?

  9. Just got into graphic design due to COVID and MAN your channel is literally EVERYTHING I need! Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to make this for us, it means a lot.

  10. what i cant figure out is when you were cutting the bottom part and using the pen tool the top part automatically closed off, how did you do that or how that happen?

  11. Watching your videos since 2019, i have learned a lot ! thanks man . Really great content . Keep going.

  12. Thanks for your videos Charley. One suggestion though… I think that you miss to explain some steps. If you could be more specific that’d help us alot specially the beginners. An example when you did the cutting for the 2 circles. I was trying your way but wouldn’t work until I locked the guide then it alowed me to make the cut. Another example is when you installed the 7 triangles in between the 2 half circles. How did you send from the fron to in-between. Just some constructive feed back but other than that I really like your way of teaching . Keep it up man!

  13. bro ty so much for inspiring me. Bro thanks for giving others a chance even with this being a real competitive field.

    1. Have the same problem. I can’t get the scissors tool to do anything, it just let’s me click but doesn’t separate the shape at all.

    1. Sure bud, he actually didn’t explain it. The revolvers originally have “white” inside fill. He used direct selection tool > select white inside revolver > go to select > same > fill colour (this selects all the white colour inside the revolver) > delete. Then he copied it and pasted it in place > Merge > Unite > right click > arrange > send backward (behind original black revolver). Hope that makes sense 🙂

Not hitting on Charley, great advice and tutorial but sometimes you go too fast bro 🙂

  14. Sir you are doing lovely work
I have a suggestion that what if after making design you could tell us that the the design you have made, on what color it will look good,
Bcz beginner do not have much id about any thing if you would tell each and evey as you are doimg with that you should tell on which shirt color the design would lookg by applying it on movkups.

  15. Any suggestions on where I can print online designs on tshirt? Dont know if you still doing DTG.

  16. Thanks for your cool videos Charley. Sometimes it´s bit hard for me to follow what you´re telling us cause english is not my mother language and you´re talking quite fast sometimes 🙂 But it´s worth listening carefully to your words cause I didn´t find such good videos in german language. Pls. go on like this, you help me a lot! 👍👍👍

  17. @7:41 So I have kind of a little question… how do you go about trimming the whiskers behind the banner? Thank you so much for this new tutorial series!

  18. SO cool! I remember suggesting this to you in a poll and I since got really discouraged in my process of learning illustrator but tutorials like this are helping so much. Great video!

  19. I love this Video bro! make more videos like this and also if you have an Affinity designer if you could just throw in a couple tutorials as well! 😁

  20. Thank you Charley, got software couple of days before watching this and thanks to you i created my first logo! (ok i did the exact one shown on this video you did) it took me a few hours to work it out and what is what and where things are, but i did it. TShirt printing is something im looking to achieve in 2020, i studied graphic design back in 1997 but left it till now! So im happy i found your channel it means alot to create Logos in either Illustrator, Affinity … Always loved skateboard desgin, music and recently picked up a DSLR camera … anyway im rambling but ..Nice one Bro!

  21. Great tutorial again! How do you come up with these ideas for these small bits like triangles/spikes and circles, etc? Where do you take inspiration from?

    1. Charley Pangus yes it does 😊 what are your go to sites for inspiration? the biggest issue for me to have art I like that also sells because not everything does. Still great feeling is to see something and know like 2-3 ways how to create it in AI 😀😀

    2. shagures honestly it just comes to me naturally. I’m blessed to have a creative mind. Sometimes when I’m going through a creative block I seek inspiration by searching for art online and just analyzing what I like about it. Hope this makes sense haha

  22. Hey charlie pengus i would really appreciate if you could tell me the top 3 best t shirt brands that are the best in quality. Would really help me out. Thank you

  23. Could you do (or do you have) a video on how to do a “spin off” design? I’ve seen some companies or bands will use a well known logo like the McDonalds logo, for example, but use McDonalds font to put their brand name over top of it

  24. thank you for the very useful video, very expensive lessons were not taught in my school or colage.

  25. In my Mexico retirement years, I am trying to make a passive income of a Tshirt-merch biz out of a lifelong but amateur affinity for Design-typography starting with Pagemaker 1.0 in mid 80s….yeah…I know… Your tutorials suit me best – short and always full of nifty shortcuts; Biz tips; and design taste similar to my own…just perfect… Charley, you´re the best, man. Mahalo nui loa brah. Thank you very much for explaining what amounts to a starship warp drive to a caveman.

  26. I have something that I would like to suggest. It would be awesome if you make a video about family/ friend reunion shirt (shirt designing – family tree; estimation for # of shirts and more). Thank you! Always enjoy your vids. Plus do more of logo redesigning.

  27. Great video man. I just learned the texture trick myself and use the transparency mask layer of the object so It only affects the art piece I want and texture moves with the piece. Looking forward to these videos. The affect curve tool was new to me.

  28. I have been using illustrator from a long time but I always find some really simple techniques in your videos which I always complicate myself. Bravo dude…

  29. Do you have a special place where you meet your clients o do you meet them in your home?

    1. @Charley Pangus if u do i would greatly appreciate it. U have helped me out so much this past year bro

  30. I just wanted to thank you so much. I am a student at an art school and I reaaally reaally want to be a graphic designer too, so all the knowledge you are giving in your tutorials helped me so much in the past. This tutorial is so awesome because I am in the beginning of using ProCreate and Ai, etc., and it is kind of overwhelming when you never worked with it before. This tutorial helped me out so much and I am so glad that you uploaded this video because it is worth gold. Keep up your great work, knowledge is everything and I am so glad you are sharing it with us.
